ROCHESTER - Anita T. Varney, 93, died on Tuesday, August 8, 2017. She was born in Strafford County, New Hampshire. Her mother was Leola Foss Turmelle of Strafford County, and her father was Fred Turmelle of Rochester. Her parents and her only brother Alfred Turmelle of Burlington, Vermont preceded her in death.
She graduated from Spaulding High School in Rochester in 1942 and attended Concord Business School to study bookkeeping and office management.
She married J. Winfield Varney, Jr., in 1946, upon his discharge from the Navy. She was a bookkeeper for the family's laundry and dry cleaning business in Rochester and later in Dover until her retirement in 1981. She was also a seamstress and made many of her own clothes and clothes for her children in their early years. She baked more homemade pies than can be counted, and she knitted afghans and sweaters to keep her family warm.
She and her husband had three sons: Peter and wife Lin of Rocky Mount, N.C., Tom and wife LuAnne of Alton, and Jim and wife Linda of Dover. They also had four nephews, one niece, seven grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.
In the early years of retirement, they maintained two residences; one in Milton for summertime living, and one in Florida for wintertime living. As they progressed in age, they spent more time in Florida and less in New Hampshire eventually living full time in Florida. They traveled the country in their motor home, and enjoyed golfing.
After her husband of 59 years died in 2005, Anita maintained Florida residence until she moved to Rocky Mount N.C., in 2011.
