Annual Crusader 5K raises money, spirits on a sunny Saturday

ROCHESTER - Some 70 runners turned out under azure blue skies for the second annual St. Elizabeth Seton School Crusader 5K on Saturday in downtown Rochester.

The race began and ended in front of the school on Bridge Street with a route that wended its way around the Fairgrounds section.

Hannah Bamford of Rochester, a freshman UMaine Orono soccer player, gets edged out by her brother, Benjamin, 8, during Saturday's annual running of the Crusader 5K.

Joy Wright, second-, and third-grade teacher and assistant principal, said she was very pleased with the turnout and said all funds from the race would go to pay for school supplies and repairs.

Coming in first was Mark Dorley of Portsmouth followed by the Rev. Thomas Duston, pastor at St. Mary Catholic Church and Steve Sirois of Rochester, who said he wished there were more running events held in the city throughout the year.

All participants were treated to bottled water and granola bars before and after the race.

The 5K's chief sponsors were Runners Alley of Portsmouth and the Seacoast Running Project.
