The Northern Seacoast seems to have escaped unscathed the first phase of a threesome of snow events this Christmas weekend.

Rochester Police Sgt. Michael Miele said today no major accidents had been reported overnight and that downtown streets were pretty clear.

Back roads, however, were for the most part snow-covered but reported to be not that slick as temperatures continue to rise today.

"It's 30 right now and the roads are slushing up pretty good," said Lebanon Road Commissioner Tom Torno around 10:30 a.m.

Torno said road crews worked overnight till around 3 a.m., scraping town roads and laying down a mixture of sand and salt.

He said they'd probably be out again tonight after dark for another scrape if temperatures begin to fall and the roads begin to ice up again.

The winter storm advisory continues through 10 tonight, but right now it's just a light rain, with no icing occurring on trees and limbs, Torno said.

Weather sources say we could get 2-4 tenths of an inch of ice. Much more than that could spell downed branches and power lines.

Christmas Eve should be the best day for last-minute shopping with sunny skies in the morning, clouds in the afternoon and some snow very late, perfect timing for Santa to make his rounds.

Meanwhile, Christmas Day will be a snowy wonderland, with snow predicted through the day and into the evening.
