ALTON - Authorities on Monday disclosed that an autopsy on the Alton man fatally shot on Friday revealed that, like his wife, he died of a single gunshot wound to the head.

James Eckert, 48, died late Friday, according to a press release from the attorney generals office received Saturday afternoon.

Police have arrested an 11-year-old boy and charged him with murder in the death of 50-year-old Lizette Eckert, who was found dead in the couple's home early Friday morning after police responded to a 911 call from the Eckerts' residence at 76 Dobbins Way, which is located near the New Durham line.

Reports from the state AG's office noted on Friday that James Eckert had been shot multiple times, leading to speculation that he may have been hit by nonlethal gunfire prior to being shot in the head.

Meanwhile, a report in the Portland Press Herald said today that the Eckerts were both South Portland chiropractors in the late '90s.

The double homicide has attracted regional news coverage with the Boston Globe reporting on a 2011 Chapter 13 bankruptcy filing that shows the Eckerts owned a lakeside home in Raymond and possessed two Kel-Tec P-3AT handguns, a 12-gauge shotgun and a .22-caliber rifle.

Police have cited juvenile reporting laws that prohibit the release of information regarding potential crimes.

The AG's office has not upgraded the charges against the 11-year-old since James Eckert's death.

Officials have not disclosed the relationship between the shooter and the couple, but according to the Portland Press Herald, friends of the family in Maine said they had a biological teenage daughter and two adopted sons who were preteens.
