CONCORD - A Maine man who trafficked in heroin in the Rochester area has been sentenced to 27 months in federal prison, it was announced today.

According to a release from U.S. District Court in Concord, Timothy G. Zani, 39, of Berwick, was found during the spring of 2015 to be distributing heroin in the Berwick and Somersworth area.

On three occasions between May 7 and June 10, Zani sold heroin to cooperating individuals at locations in Somersworth, officials said.

"The distribution of heroin and fentanyl pose a great threat to public safety," said U.S. Attorney Scott W. Murray. "We will continue to work closely with all of our law enforcement partners to investigate and prosecute those who are distributing these deadly substances in the Granite State."

"Heroin and fentanyl are causing deaths in record numbers and DEA's top priority is to aggressively pursue and bring to justice anyone who distributes these poisons," said DEA Special Agent in Charge Brian D. Boyle. "Today's sentence not only holds Mr. Zani accountable for his crimes but serves as a warning to those traffickers who are fueling the opioid epidemic."

This case was investigated by the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Berwick Police Department. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Anna Dronzek.
