MILTON - Between a driver running off the road into the Milton Moose sign last night and an emergency drill at Nute High today that entailed a walk by students down White Mountain Highway to a "save haven," a milelong stretch of Route 125 was fraught with activity for a while this afternoon.

Last night in the early morning hours it was reported a driver headed north on White Mountain Highway drifted off the northbound lane and crashed into the Milton Moose Club sign, smashing it to smithereens. The vehicle then sheared off a utility pole before coming to a stop.

No charges are expected and the driver is said to be OK.

Power and phone lines to the Moose and the nearby Milton Veterinary Clinic were down much of the afternoon.

It was not clear as of this posting when power and phone service would be restored.

Milton Police Chief Richard Krauss was not immediately available for comment on this accident as Milton Police and Nute High and Middle School was also participating in the emergency drill.

As part of the drill the entire student body walked en masse from Nute to the Milton Assembly of God church on White Mountain Highway today around 1 p.m. as traffic stacked up on either side.
