We applaud the Rochester City Council for allowing the Rochester Fair to pay for its safety details after the fair rather than demanding prepayment as they originally had.

It had seemed anti-productive, even unseemly, to many of us that the city would be so hard on a new group trying to reopen the fair after being so lax with the former board whose lack of oversight was partly to blame for the fair being shut down last year ending a proud 140-year tradition.

Rochester offers a wide variety of culture and entertainment for its residents as well as those in nearby towns: the Rochester Opera House, the city's many fine dining establishments and events like Wings and Wheels and the recent 4^th of July fireworks show to name a few.

But make no mistake about it. The Rochester Fair is head and shoulders above any of the above venues and events when it comes to the sheer numbers of folks from every strata of society and socio-economic group who take pride in and enjoy its coming around again year after year in September.

We hope Rochester Fire and Rochester Police will do their best to partner with this fledgling new Rochester Fair board to help ensure a successful run.

After all the Rochester Fair is the grand dame of Rochester tradition and deserves to be treated as such.
