ROCHESTER - With the end of the school year on the horizon, Rochester's elementary schools have chosen books for students to read over the summer to keep their literacy skills fresh.

To celebrate the start of summer, all eight elementary schools will host kickoff events where students will receive their summer reading books, which will be donated by the Rochester Rotary Club.

The kickoff events are as follows:

June 10 at 9:15 a.m.: Nancy Loud School

June 11 at 8:45 a.m.: McClelland School

June 14 at 8:25 a.m.: William Allen School

June 14 at 9 a.m.: East Rochester School

June 17 at 8:45 a.m.: School Street School

June 17 at 8:30 a.m.: Gonic School

June 18 at 9:45 a.m.: Chamberlain Street School

June 21 at 8:30 a.m.: Maple Street Magnet School

The Rochester Rotary Club will once again purchase books for all Rochester first- and second-grade students, providing them with materials to read during their summer vacation.

This year's summer reading program will have a jungle theme, with students being provided books about animals and nature.

Faculty from each school have chosen books for their students, including titles like "A Whale of a Tale," "Dragons and Marshmallows," "Chalk," "Elephant and Piggie," books from the "Magic Treehouse" series, "The Giant Germ," and multiple choices from the "Frog and Toad" and National Geographic series.

"We're so grateful for the continued support of the Rotary Club, which makes books accessible to all of our first-and second-grade students," Assistant Superintendent Kyle Repucci said. "Summer reading is an important enrichment tool, and we're so glad to be able to provide them with books of their own that are fun and keep them engaged during their time away from school."
