LEBANON - Constantine Battis, better known as "Charlie", 87, was born on December 9, 1928, in Newburyport, Mass., to Greek immigrant parents, Anna and Stasos Battis. He died on Saturday, March 5, 2016, at the Epsom Health Center after a long illness.
He s survived by his companion of many years, Dorothy Hansen of Portsmouth; his children: Anne Marie (David McGee) of Ottawa, Canada; Judy Aiken (Kevin Aiken) of Arlington, Mass.; John (Michal Tziyon) of Brooklyn, N.Y.; and Paul, of Rochester, N.H. In addition, he leaves three grandchildren; Katherine, Liam and Ronen, all of Brooklyn, N.Y., as well as several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife Margaret (O'Malley), as well as his brothers Socrates and John, and sister Despina Pazar.
Charlie attended Newburyport schools before enlisting in the Army where he served in Japan as part of the U.S. Occupation at the end of WWII. Upon his return he studied at the New England Conservatory and Boston University, where he graduated with a music degree in 1956. He was an accomplished pianist and taught music in local schools for several years. In the 1970s he began a long career at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. He lived in South Berwick, Maine for many years where he raised his family. More recently he had lived in Lebanon, Maine.
