ROCHESTER - Jerome (Jerry) Peter Lang, MD, 64, of Salmon Falls Road, died in an automobile accident on Monday, March 6, 2017, in Northwood, New Hampshire. Born November 6, 1952, in Melrose Park, Illinois, the son of John J. and Frances E. (Kirke) Lang.
He was working as a physician for the Concentra Medical Group. Dr. Lang was educated at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland in the rigorous MD/PhD program, graduating in 1982.
Jerry's wide-ranging medical activities included public and private clinical work and research, as well as charitable endeavors. As a commissioned officer of the US Public Health Service, he worked on Indian reservations in Montana and New Mexico. While a Student Health Services and football team physician at Washington State University and an emergency-room physician in Pullman, Wash., he participated in Washington State Health Care Reform and authored the final Investigation Group report. He also served on the Executive Committee and as Chief of Staff for Pullman Regional Hospital.
Also at WSU, Dr. Lang was the Physician Consultant for the School of Pharmacy, helping to create a pharmacist training program that would allow the women of Malaysia to obtain birth control without a prescription. He also served as a Study Physician for NASA and co-authored the research report on the effects of iodine in astronauts' drinking water, which was published in the Journal of Toxicology and Environmental Health.
In addition to his clinical work, Jerry was also a fluent and talented medical writer. The medical documents he wrote included Investigator Brochures for clinical trials, FDA submissions, and cancer information for patients.
As a lifelong, passionate supporter of Doctors Without Borders and Volunteers in Medical Missions, Jerry cared deeply about other people and acted on his beliefs by volunteering his medical services in Nicaragua annually for the past three years and in Honduras four years ago.
He held medical licenses in New Hampshire, Vermont, and Maine, and was a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians; a Diplomate of the National Board of Medical Examiners; and a Member of the Royal College of General Practitioners (UK), the American College of Occupational & Environmental Medicine, the American College of Emergency Physicians, and the American Medical Writers Association.
In his free time, Jerry was a dedicated photographer, especially of New England's natural beauty, an amateur astronomer, and an admirer and writer of science fiction. After his mother's death, Jerry dedicated himself to preserving her legacy of reader's theatre plays for seniors by making them available online. His family will continue this work in his honor.
Jerry is survived by his wife, Joann Young, DVM, of Rochester; two sisters, Devora Krischer of Ariz., and Kathryn P. Bean of Ill.; in-laws Gordon and Debra Young of Jaffrey, N.H., Diane and Joseph Bassett of Mass., Brian and Sue Young of Mass., Mark and Jennifer Young of Mass., Suzanne and Gregory Esmay of R.I., Heidi and Jeff Russ of Vt., and Michelle and Andre Vega of Mass.; and many nieces and nephews, cousins, colleagues, and dear friends.
