ROCHESTER - A dryer fire is being blamed for a smoky basement blaze that closed parts of Chestnut Hill Road for about an hour on Monday.

Firefighters responded to the call at 171 Chestnut Hill Road around 9:45 a.m. and quickly knocked the fire down, Rochester Fire Deputy Chief Tim Wilder said today.

"Damage was limited to water damage around the dryer," Wilder said, adding that the residence should be livable again in a couple of days once the basement is cleaned up.

A family of four who were all home at the time heard the smoke detectors go off and got out of the building, Wilder said.

A number of household pets, including, dogs, gerbils, rabbits and a pet rat also escaped unharmed.

Mutual aid from Farmington, Durham, Milton and Somersworth all assisted in battling the blaze.

Wilder stressed that while there are many factors in what can cause a dryer fire, proper and timely maintenance can mitigate the chances.

He said prevention tips include making sure lint traps and outside vents are clear and inspecting electrical wires.
