MILTON - It won't be too long before the volunteers who keep Veterans Park tidy can stop lugging five-gallon containers from home to water the grass and plants that keep it beautiful.

That's because over the next few days a well will be dug onsite that will bring running water to the site of the town's Veterans Day and some Memorial Day exercises.

"We're very happy about it," said Milton VFW Commander Bob Graham, who was watching the progress of the work being done by Forest Pump of Rochester.

Milton Selectmen approved some $2,800 for the project, which was to be completed by the Rochester company at cost, Milton Selectman Mike Beaulieu said at a September selectmen's meeting.

A Forest Pump employee began drilling on Wednesday, and it is expected to take a few days before the job is completed. Beaulieu, who recently resigned as Lebanon's (Maine) Code Enforcement Officer, was also on hand Wednesday as work began.

Graham said by drilling a well they won't have to pay for water from the town's water system, and that the only cost will be the electricity for the pump, about $90 a year, he said.

Stan Nadeau of the Water Commission said on Wednesday that selectmen had earlier asked for a meeting with the Water Commission to discuss possible terms for town water at the park, but never showed.
