LIMERICK, Maine - A New Hampshire man was arrested on heroin possession charges after fleeing from police during a traffic stop in Limerick.

The incident unfolded around 4 a.m. on Friday when a York County Sheriff's Office deputy initiated a traffic stop for a broken taillight on a 1998 Toyota camper on Sokokis Trail.

The vehicle failed to stop, even after the deputy activated the emergency equipment on the cruiser.

The driver of the Toyota then continued southbound on Sokokis Trail entering into Waterboro, at one point shutting off the vehicle's exterior lights, York County Sheriff Bill King said in a statement.

The vehicle then turned onto Bradeen Road, which is a dead end, and later crashed through a snowbank and kept going onto an uncleared path in the woods. After traveling about 150, the vehicle could not continue and two occupants fled from the vehicle into the woods.

Deputies followed tracks and found Martina Cervantes, 27, of Concord, N.H., and Shawn Davis, 28, of East Wakefield, hiding in separate locations under a tree and inside the crawl space of a nearby residence.

Davis, who was determined to be the driver, was found to be in possession of some 7 grams of heroin. Davis was also found to have warrants out of Maine and New Hampshire on separate drug-related charges.

Davis was also charged with eluding an officer and additional charges are anticipated. He is being held on a $5,000 bail.

Cervantes was charged with failure to submit to a police officer and is being held on a $500 bail.

Both will be arraigned on Monday.
