NEWPORT, R.I. - Eastern Boat of Milton's Seaway 24 won Best New Powerboat Under 30 Feet at the Newport International Boat Show.

The prestigious award was announced Friday.

The Newport for New Products (NFNP) awards are a highlight of the industry and are open to domestic and foreign products launched in the United States after April 1, 2015, and made their boat show debut at Newport.

Judged on Thursday during the opening day of the Show, the Seaway 24 Sport was selected by a team of industry experts on the basis of innovation, value to the consumer, safety and aesthetics.

Eastern Boats, a fixture in Milton for more than 20 years, expanded its manufacturing footprint in the Milton Industrial Park earlier this year.

The company began its line with a single 18-foot model then slowly, but steadily broadened its stock to include about a dozen different models, ranging in length from small fishing runabouts to 35-foot cruisers, some with flying bridges.

Known for their clean, crisp Downeast lines and sturdy construction, Eastern developed a solid customer base using direct sales, but now has developed a nationwide dealer network as well.

Besides their own signature brand, the Eastern acquired the Seaway brand in 2009 and Rosborough in 2012.

On selecting the Seaway 24 Sport as this year's winner in Newport, expert comments included: "It has a classic New England look with a strong purpose-built design. Good price. Good quality. This dayboat does what it is built to do and does it well."

Eastern has dealers all over the East Coast as well as Seattle, Wash., and Long Beach, Calif., among others. A new area of growth is expected in the Great Lakes region.

The Newport International Boat Show opened on Thursday and continues through Sunday along the Newport Waterfront on America's Cup Avenue in Newport.

One of the largest in-water boat shows in the country, this year's event has more than 750 exhibitors from around the world with an exceptional assortment of boats of every type and style from 15 to 110 feet, and a wide variety of accessories, equipment, electronics, gear and services for boaters.
