Elderly motorcyclist injured in collision with deer

ROCHESTER - An elderly Maine woman who was a passenger on a three-wheeled motorcycle was seriously injured today when a deer collided with her and the operator on Farmington Road.

Rochester police got the call around 11:40 a.m. and upon arriving to the area between Walmart and Tractor Supply found that the woman had been knocked off the trike by the deer.

Police say Clifford Wescott, 84 of Wells, Maine, was operating his 2010 Spyder trike northbound with his passenger, Carol Delisle, 80, also of Wells, when a deer emerged from the opposite side of the road and crossed.

The deer attempted to leap over the vehicle, grazing Wescott's helmet and striking Delisle, who was pulled off the vehicle.

Delisle was wearing a helmet, but it became dislodged when the deer struck.

Delisle was Medflighted by Lifeflight of Maine out of Sanford to the Maine Medical Center with undisclosed head injuries.

The deer fled into the woods after the collision and was not located. Traffic was shut down on Route 11 while a landing zone was established and the scene was investigated.

Southbound traffic was stopped at the Farmington line by the Farmington Police Department and northbound traffic was diverted up Little Falls Bridge Road for a short period.

It was not immediately clear whether Wescott had sustained any injuries in the crash.
