DOVER - A former Milton man and convicted sex offender who had been enrolled in Strafford County's drug court initiative got a suspended sentence on a duty to inform charge, but was removed from drug court and sentenced to a year in county jail on Tuesday.
Craig Wiggin, 40, formerly of Kingsbury Drive, was sentenced after his expulsion from drug court. According to an indictment filed with court paperwork regarding the sentence, Wiggin was indicted last month for Duty to Report, for failing to register with Somersworth Police in a timely and periodic fashion in May 2017. He pleaded guilty to that charge on Tuesday.
He was sentenced to one to three years on the duty to inform charge, all suspended for three years, but drew the 12 months after his drug court status was removed. The three years of suspension in connection with the duty to report charge won't begin till his year in jail is over.
Wiggin had pretrial credit of 64 days so he'll be eligible for release in a little less than 10 months.
The drug court program seeks to help individuals avert incarceration while dealing with substance abuse issues.
While the specifics of what caused Wiggin to be removed weren't spelled out, drug court termination can be a result of several factors, including drug use, failure to remain arrest free, failure to take required drug tests or dishonesty among other things.
