Ex-Rochester jail guard gets year in prison for bringing drugs to work

DOVER - The Rochester man accused of trying to smuggle drugs into the Strafford County jail while working as a guard there pleaded guilty to a single charge of drug possession and was sentenced to a year in jail on Thursday at Strafford County Superior Court.

Bryant Shipman, 26, who had worked at the jail almost two years, had been indicted on trafficking charges a year ago, but that charge was dropped.

Shipman was intercepted by jail personnel as he arrived for work around 2 p.m. on March 22, 2017. Officials estimated at the time he was carrying $2,000-$5,000 of what is believed to be fentanyl or heroin and cocaine.

The plea deal allows Shipman to be approved for home confinement if OK'd by prison officials.

He will face a year of parole once his is released.
