ROCHESTER - Tucked within the Rochester Community Center is a beacon of hope for anyone who's been the victim of some of the worst crimes the dark side of human existence seems to be capable of.

Domestic violence, sex assault, elder abuse, stalking, human trafficking.

When the victims of these types of crimes feel like they have nowhere to turn, they will find someone who will listen at the Strafford County Family Justice Center, said Haylee, a victim's advocate who said she couldn't give her last name due to the clients she serves and ongoing safety issues they may face.

Haylee, who was providing information at a booth during the recent National Night Out on the Rochester Common, said she handles about 10-15 ongoing cases involving female victims of domestic violence and sexual assault.

She said their services begin with an informal intake interview during which time they assess the victim and what services they need. The Family Justice Center will help with them getting everything they need, including legal help, emotional support, clothing and food.

"We are victim oriented," Haylee said. "We get folks the services they need. We have several partners, and all services are free and confidential."

Some of the agencies that provide partner support include New Hampshire Legal Assistance, area law enforcement agencies, Haven, Strafford County Child Advocacy Center, DCYF, the Strafford County Attorneys Office, Grace Community Church and Waypoint.

Haylee, who has a bachelor's degree in psychology, said while she's not sure what career path she will ultimately follow, working for the Family Justice Center has been a rewarding experience.

"It feels good to be able to help these women who have no support," she said. "To be able to provide assistance is very satisfying."

Likewise, while it hasn't happened to her in her first six months on the job, she said when victims walk away from services for whatever reason, that's "the most disappointing."
