CONCORD - Senate Majority Leader Dan Feltes today announced his candidacy for New Hampshire governor in the 2020 election.

The Concord Democrat made the announcement in a four-minute video, shared first with WMUR.

Feltes is the first Democrat to formally announce a full-fledged candidacy against Republican Gov. Chris Sununu, who opted not to run for the U.S. Senate, instead running for a third two-year term as New Hampshire governor.

Feltes said he was running to help working class families and claimed Gov. Sununu was more interested in helping corporations than the little guy.

"It's critical that we work together to move New Hampshire forward for working families, especially when costs are rising on everything from health care to prescription drugs to property taxes, and we have a governor who doesn't get what working families are going through," Feltes told WMUR on Monday. "He is concerned about big tax breaks for corporations while everyone's property taxes are skyrocketing."

Feltes also backs paid family leave legislation, gun violence prevention and full reproductive rights for women.

Feltes was also a co-sponsor of recent bail reform legislation, the shortcomings of which have been highlighted in a spotlight series in The Rochester Voice over the past month.

After an initial statement made to The Rochester Voice in which he claimed it was working, he has failed to respond to follow-up questions.
