HAMPTON, N.H. - Police say driver inattention may be to blame in a Hampton crash that injured five people on Sunday on Route 101.

The crash occurred a little before noon when State Troopers say a 2014 Chrysler Avenger, driven by Giovanni Lopes, 22, of Rochester, was traveling eastbound, and as traffic slowed, his vehicle was struck in the rear by a 2008 Jeep Wrangler being driven by Brady Hallahan, 23, of Central Square, NY.

The vehicle being driven by Lopes contained four passengers. The passenger in the left rear seat, a 14-year-old male, sustained a serious head injury and was transported to the Portsmouth Regional Hospital and later Medflighted to Tufts Medical Center in Boston. A passenger in the right rear seat, a 16-year-old female, sustained serious back and neck injuries and was treated at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

Lopes was not injured, while the other two passengers suffered minor injuries.

Hallahan, the sole occupant of his vehicle, suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene by members of the Hampton Fire Department.

Driver inattention on the part of Hallahan appears to be a possible contributing factor in this accident, however, all aspects are being investigated.

Traffic was diverted off of exit #13 for approximately two hours as troopers conducted their investigation.

Assisting the New Hampshire State Police at the scene were the Hampton Police Department, the Hampton Fire Department, and the New Hampshire State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Unit.

This accident remains under investigation by Trooper Kevin Devlin. Anyone with information pertaining to this accident is asked to contact Trooper Devlin, NH State Police-Troop A at (603) 223-8490.
