Deb Bedard, a local landscape consultant, explains how to get the most of your veggie or flower garden at a recent SMGC meeting in Springvale. (SMGC photo)

Southern Maine Garden Club met recently at the Springvale Library for a lesson in growing happy veggies and plants. The forum was led by Deb Bedard, a local landscape consultant from Acton.

Attendees just knew from the get-go that Deb was very excited about her subject. She said she fell in love with growing things after her very first botany class in middle school. She explained the difference between "full sun", "part sun" and "shade tolerant" plants and it is important to check out the amount of sun a veggie or plant needs to thrive before you put it into the ground.

She discussed the importance of enough water, good soil (you can always amend the soil), mulch, fertilizer and how often you should re-mulch and re-fertilize. The audience had so many questions for Deb, who works part time at Springvale Nursery in Sanford; and she patiently took the time and answered all the attendees' questions. She even devoted some time to garden pests and together with the club members offered some suggestions for ridding your garden of pests from insects that plague flowers and veggies (hand pick the buggers off) to groundhogs, chipmunks, voles (companion plant borage, basil and dill to detract) and deer - (a good fence!).

SMGC meets throughout the year at the Springvale Library on the third Wednesday of every month beginning at 6:30 PM (unless otherwise noted). The public is invited to attend to sample our meetings to see if you would like to join us. The June meeting will be on Wednesday, June 15th, at the Springvale Library; and the topic will be on Growing, Using and Drying Herbs and presenters will be Thea Murphy, Director of the Trafton Center; and Andy Orazio, Director of the YMCA. FMI please contact in ME - Paula Frodyma at 207-475-8142or in NH - Donna Claveau at 603-332-4860.
