ROCHESTER - George J. Hester, 84, of Rochester, died Friday, Dec. 11, 2015, at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital.
George was born March 19, 1931, raised in Dover and graduated from Dover High School Class of 1949, where he played and lettered in baseball, football and hockey.
George served in the Navy and was a veteran of the Korean Conflict. He served two tours of duty aboard aircraft carriers U.S.S. Philippines Seas and the U.S.S. Lake Champlain.
George was a graduate of the FBI National Academy, Class of 1966. George began his law enforcement career with Dover Police Department in 1955 and was later promoted to lieutenant inspector in charge of Criminal Investigations.
In 1967, George joined the New Hampshire State Police. He started his career in the Criminal Investigation Bureau and retired in 1976 as a detective sergeant.
After retiring from the New Hampshire State Police, George then worked for United Engineers and Constructors at Seabrook Station as chief of security until 1984. George then worked for the New England State Police Information Network.
He was a past president of the N.H. Police Association, Strafford County Law Enforcement Association, was appointed by the governor for two terms as a Trustee on the N.H. Retirement System Board, and was a member of the N.H. Police Chiefs Association and the N.H. Criminal Investigators Association.
He was active in the Dover Youth Organization for many years coaching Dover Minor League, Dover Southside Little League, Dover Babe Ruth and on the Board of Directors for Dover Youth Hockey for several years.

George is survived by his wife, Mary Ann Hester, two daughters and four sons from his marriage to Louise Hester, who predeceased him in 1982. They are: daughters, Sherry Lucius and Carol George; and sons Dennis Hester, Brian Hester, George Hester and wife Cyndy, Matthew Hester and wife Rebecca. George leaves behind 15 grandchildren; and nine great grandchildren.
George is also survived by his stepfamily: daughter Catherine O'Connor and husband Jim; granddaughter Shaunna Martin and husband Jason; and great grandson Teigan Martin.
