ROCHESTER - Following a brief illness Gladys (Happy) Marie Pelton died on Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2018. Born Nov. 27, 1927 in Lewisburg, Ohio, the youngest of six children. While attending Miami University of Ohio with a major in education, she was given the name "Happy" which stuck for the rest of her life.
At her first job working at National Cash Register Company in Dayton, Ohio she met the love of her life Donald Pelton, who was there for training. They married Sept. 6, 1952 and moved to Pelham, and raised their family. She worked as a substitute teacher in Pelham. In 1970 when Donald was transferred to Dover, working for NCR, they moved to Rochester. Happy resided there the rest of her life assisting her daughter Kim and son in-law Dan with their greenhouse and gardens. Happy and Don in 1959 bought a summer place in Denmark, Maine, on Hancock Pond, where she spent all her summers. After Don's retirement they purchased a place in Park City/Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., spending their winters next to their son Drew, wife Pam and their two granddaughters Elisha and Erika.
She enjoyed traveling with her husband on Senior Bus Trips and Cruises, gardening, canning, bowling, dancing, needlework, performing in variety shows, playing cards and talking with customers when they came to buy flowers.
Active in many civic organizations: Rochester Grange, Pomona, State and National Granges. James Farrington Chapter of Eastern Star, First Congo Church and Good Ole Sports of Rochester.
She is survived by her daughter Kimber Bascom and husband Dan, son Drew Pelton and wife Pamela of Casco, Maine, granddaughter's Elisha and husband Erik Symanski of Germany and Erika Butterfield of Florida, Great granddaughters Cordova and Cydney Symanski and Anne and Brooke Butterfield. With many nieces and nephews in Ohio.
Predeceased by her husband Donald married for 54 years and all her brothers and sisters.
Though her stay was brief we want to thank Gafney Home and Hyder House for the loving care they gave Mom during her last few days.
