SANFORD, Maine - The baby girl injured on Thursday when the car she was riding in was rear-ended by a box truck has died.

York County Sheriff William King today released a letter of gratitude from the family for first responders and doctors and staff at the Barbara Bush Children's Hospital who tried desperately to save the girl's life.

Gabrielle Kennedy was just 10 months old.

"Under the most painful and tragic of situations, our family has had the opportunity to be witness to pure kindness by strangers, an outpouring of support from our community and the unwavering love and support from our family," the message read.

The family also asked that they not be contacted by those wishing to offer legal or other services.

"No parent or family is ever prepared for the loss of a child, let alone in such a public and horrific way," the letter added. "We ask only for your continued love, support and prayers as we stumble through this journey."

The crash occurred around 6:30 a.m. on Thursday when sheriff's deputies say a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee operated by Ellen Kennedy, 37, of Sanford was traveling east on Main Street in Waterboro when she stopped to make a left-hand turn onto Straw Mill Brook Road.

While stopped for the turn, Kennedy's vehicle was struck from behind by a 2019 Freightliner 26' Box Truck driven by Rene Romero, 53, of Lynn, Mass.

Gabrielle Kennedy was Lifeflighted to Maine Medical Center in Portland.

Romero and Ellen Kennedy sustained minor injuries and were treated at the scene.

After consultation with the District Attorney's office, Romero was arrested for aggravated driving to endanger.

It was not immediately known whether Romero could face enhanced charges as a result of the baby's death.

For those wishing to show their support and love through a contribution, the family is asking that they make gift to the Barbara Bush Children's Hospital.
