ROCHESTER - Rochester Fire investigators today are poring over damage in an apartment house fire From Thursday night that left families from a dozen apartments homeless

The blaze at Sunset Arms Apartments at 63 Salmon Falls Road was contained to one unit, but heavy smoke and some water damage rendered the entire building uninhabitable, at least for now, Rochester Fire Chief Norm Sanborn said today.

The fire was called in a little after 8 p.m., and when firefighters arrived they found heavy smoke and flame coming from a second story apartment, Sanborn said.

The fire apparently started in the bedroom of the apartment, but a cause is yet to be determined.

The Red Cross assisted families in finding various places to stay. Sanborn said he's hopeful all except for the occupants of the burned apartment will be able to return home within a couple of days.

The wood frame and brick veneer building is about a quarter mile south of the intersection of Salmon Falls and Milton roads.

At least four people, including adults and children, lived in the burned apartment.

No injuries of either civilians or firefighters were reported, but two family cats in the apartment struck by fire did perish.

Sanborn said several firefighters who fought the second alarm blaze remained onsite till after midnight watching for hot spots.
