ROCHESTER - James (Jim) Hughes, 82, died on Friday, July 8, 2016, surrounded by his family. Jim was born in Dover on April 25, 1934, to the late Catherine and Henry Hughes. He grew up in Somersworth and graduated from Somersworth High School in 1951 where he was a member of the baseball team.
After high school, Jim served his country in the Navy for over two decades, attaining the rank of Senior Petty Chief Officer. He saw combat in both the Korean and Vietnam wars, where he earned several distinctions and medals, including the Vietnam Gallantry Cross, the United Nations Service Medal and the American Defense Service Medal.
After retiring from the Navy, Jim worked at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. During this time, he met and married the love of his life, Norma Mary Hughes.
Jim loved playing fast pitch softball and was a lifelong fan of Boston sports. He enjoyed telling stories to his friends and family, all of whom considered themselves enriched from hearing them.
Jim is survived by his wife of 29 years, Norma; his brother, Robert; his step-children, Roland Beaudette, Cubbi Lirette, Debbie Towle, Laura Towle, Raymond Beaudette and Rick Dunton. He is also survived by 14 grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and several cousins. He will be truly missed.
