LEBANON, Maine - The ATV driver who hit a pedestrian inside 4X4 Proving Grounds in Lebanon late Saturday night only to flee the scene afterward was later identified and arrested, Lebanon Fire and EMS Chief Steven Merrill said today.

The accident occurred around 10:30 p.m. on one of the side roads between the two main entrances to the 4X4 complex, Merrill said.

The 29-year-old victim who is from Sanford was in serious but stable condition when Lebanon EMS got there, Merrill said. She was transported to Maine Medical Center in Portland for further evaluation.

The Proving Grounds was in the throes of its first major weekend event of the summer.

4X4 Proving Grounds owner Kurt Zeller said his security team had handled the incident and met with State Police to help with the investigation.

He said the incident marred what had been a very successful weekend.

State Police were not immediately available for comment.

Merrill said it was very fortuitous that he had had both ambulances staffed and ready to go throughout the day as well as having two dedicated EMTs at the Proving Ground.

He said along with the pedestrian accident, Lebanon EMTs responded to two other incidents at the Proving Grounds on Saturday, including a slight laceration and a true medical event. He said the latter two incidents all had satisfactory resolutions.
