Maine man killed in confrontation with police identified

NEWTON, N.H. - The Maine man killed in an officer-related shooting in Newton on Thursday night has been identified as Michael Brown of Presque Isle, officials say.

Attorney General Gordon J. MacDonald and New Hampshire State Police first announced around 5 a.m. today that he was fatally shot by police on Thursday during an incident in Newton.

Earlier reports indicated that around 11:10 p.m. a police chase began in Massachusetts involving Brown, who was wanted in connection with a sexual assault case .

Massachusetts State Troopers pursued the suspect into New Hampshire where the chase ended around 11:50 p.m. at the intersection of Bear Hill and Amesbury roads in Newton, when the suspect's vehicle hit a tree.

The suspect was subsequently shot and killed during a brief confrontation with several Massachusetts State Troopers. He was the sole occupant of the vehicle.

The names of the officers involved in incident were not released.
