ROCHESTER - A Rochester man out on bail on a simple assault and criminal mischief case from November was arrested again on Wednesday, this time for driving after suspension, misuse of plates and several other charges.

Wednesday's arrest unfolded after an officer on patrol located a Jeep Cherokee with a plate number that came back as a Mercury Cougar.

Then, as the officer initiated a traffic stop, the subject in the Cherokee got out of his vehicle and fled into a house on Jackson Street.

The apartment he went in belonged to Sumner Knowles, 23, of 2 Jackson St., Apt #3, on whom police had several warrants.

Conversations through the door occurred between the subject who turned out to be Knowles and the officer and a second responding officer. A short time later Knowles exited the apartment, Rochester Police Capt. Jason Thomas said today, and was taken into custody.

While being restrained Knowles became combative, necessitating a direct transport to Strafford County Jail, Thomas added.

Knowles was charged with several misdemeanors including, disobeying an officer, resisting arrest, driving after suspension and false inspection sticker as well as misuse of plates, a violation.

The active warrants from the November incident stem from an altercation at the Dunkin' Donuts inside Walmart during which Knowles, then an employee, was yelling at his boss and allegedly yelled profanities and poured a container of iced coffee onto the floor and his boss. He also allegedly knocked over several items on the display case causing damage.

Charges from that incident include simple assault, criminal mischief (vandalism) and disorderly conduct.

Knowles is being held on $3,500 cash pending an arraignment later today.
