Man wanted on bench warrants nabbed after foot chase

ROCHESTER - A Lebanon man with three bench warrants out against him had to be run down and brought to the ground by a Rochester Police officer Thursday after he fled on foot down Lafayette Street.

The incident unfolded as Officer Matthew Bailey, who was on mountain bike patrol around 5:30 p.m., spotted William J. Kimball, 36, of Upper Guinea Road, Lebanon, Maine, with whom Bailey had had prior dealings.

While Kimball and Bailey were conversing, he learned from dispatch about the bench warrants, but when he tried to place the cuffs on Kimball he took off running.

The officer yelled multiple times for Kimball to stop, but Kimball refused and continued running toward Chestnut Street where Bailey attempted to deploy his Taser.

However, when only one prong hit Kimball, the Taser proved ineffective, Rochester Police Capt. Jason Thomas said today, and Bailey had to bring him to the ground physically to complete the arrest.

The cash amount of the three bench warrants totaled $1,000, Thomas said.

Kimball was charged with one count of resisting arrest and held without bail pending a later arraignment.

All three bench warrants were for nonappearance in court on original charges of willful concealment, tampering with public or private records and unauthorized use of vehicle or rental property.
