MetroCast Communications announced on Friday that it has chosen Sanford, Maine, to test a 10 Gig Fiber-to-the-Premises solution for businesses, with a goal of rolling out the 10 Gig business service in all of its New Hampshire and Maine markets.

MetroCast, which has provided managed data services for businesses in the Sanford market since 2006, and has built an extensive fiber network throughout its Sanford footprint, already delivers dedicated fiber solutions using Active Ethernet, with symmetrical speeds up to 1 Gig.

The 10-Gig test, which MetroCast expects to be under way by late November, will utilize state-of-the-art Ten-Gigabit Ethernet Passive Optical Network technology (10G-EPON), which is highly scalable, flexible and cost-efficient.

"We chose Sanford for this 10-Gig test because of the robust fiber network we already have in place," said Josh Barstow, vice president of Advanced Services for MetroCast. "We are excited to build on our longtime commitment to this region by bringing cutting-edge technology to bear on the communications needs of businesses in our service areas."

Metrocast provides advanced video, Internet and phone services to homes and businesses in five states.
