Southern Maine Garden Club (SMGC) met recently at the Springvale Library (443 Maine Street, Springvale, ME) for an informative and entertaining workshop on creating terrariums. Jack Carroll, a designer from Wentworth Greenhouses (www.wentworthgreenhouses.com) in Rollinsford, NH; brought many outstanding examples of terrariums from his home - most were created with orchids - Carroll's absolute favorite flower - he even wears an image of an orchid tattooed on his leg!

One of the most jaw-dropping examples of the many terrariums he brought for show-and-tell was an enormous aquarium filled to the brim with various orchids that was such a show-stopper. He also brought attractive square glass vases for us to make our terrariums with and he went step by step with the various layers of stone for some drainage, sphagnum moss for interesting texture, then potting soil topped off with a charming plant whose Latin name I don't recall, but it is known colloquially as a "goldfish plant" because in addition to the lustrous green leaves, the flower was a little orange flower that is reminiscent of a goldfish. This was followed by a top layer of little stones he called "bonsai crushed stones" that made a nice finish for the terrarium. The club members enjoyed creating their terrariums together and will treasure them for a long time.

SMGC meets throughout the year at the Springvale Library on the third Wednesday of every month beginning at 6:30 PM (unless otherwise noted). The public is invited to attend to sample our meetings to see if you would like to join us. The next meeting will be on Wednesday, April 15th, at the Library and the club members will be assembling folios that will be used as favors at our Piscataqua District Meeting to be held on Thursday, April 30th at the Wormwood Center on Route 4 in Sanford, ME. The public is invited to attend for the Lunch and Learn section of the meeting with the proviso that you either know a member of the garden club district, or you are related to one. Our speaker will be Hillary Krampf; Founder of the Maine Seaweed Festival; and her presentation is entitled: "Make your gardens sing with seaweed". FMI please contact in ME - Mary Stewart-Dore at 207-490-1833 or in NH - Donna Claveau at 603-332-4860.
