SOMERSWORTH - Whenever you enjoy eating at a country club one thing you'll savor as much as the meal is the relaxed, convivial atmosphere that accompanies any venue where pretty much everyone knows each other's name.

And it's no different at the Oaks Grille in Somersworth where general manager Peter Harrity has his kitchen crew taking both comfort food and culinary favorites to a whole new level.

But back to the atmosphere, where diners relax at thick wooden tables and chairs with linen tablecloths while enjoying panoramic views of its award-winning golf course.

On crisp but not cold days there's a deck with open-air heaters to take the chill off.

We went on a recent chilly afternoon when our souls cried out for comfort food and found a menu fraught with soothing cold remedies.

Martha Soto Galicia enjoyed the Baked Mac & Cheese, featuring Cavatappi pasta, four-cheese Bechamel and Parmesan Panko Crumbs, with bacon.

She found the dish extremely creamy and chock full of chewy, perfectly cooked bacon.

"This was perfectly prepared," she said.

I had the Build Your Own Burger, served with field greens and tomato served on a gluten-free brioche roll, with Swiss cheese and avocado added.

It was my first time enjoying avocado as a burger add-on, and I found its smooth, rich flavor a perfect complement to the savorieness of the burger.

Chef Rob pours garlic butter over freshly ground toasted bread crumbs while preparing one of his specialties: Encrusted Baked Haddock.

Meanwhile, the fries were crispy on the outside and smooth on the inside, just the way I like them.

Our server was unusually attentive and cheerful, checking back on us often.

Happy Hour aficionados should know The Oaks offers 16-ounce drafts for $3. And on Patriot game day, pitchers are $10, flatbreads, just $8.
