LEBANON - The man who died when his car plunged into the Little River early today was trying to pass three cars when he lost control of his vehicle, State Police say.

Jeffrey Brunelle, 32, of Sanford was headed south on Little River Road when he failed to negotiate the curve, veered off to the left and took out about 60 feet of guardrail before sailing off an embankment. The car landed on its roof in shallow water near two large rocks on the other side of the river.

He died instantly, police say.

The call came in to Lebanon Fire and Rescue around 12:40 a.m. Upon arrival, crews found the vehicle off the bridge, on its roof and in the water.

Both speed and alcohol are believed to be factors in the crash, police say.

Jeff Adams, who lives in the historic Grist Mill house across the street, said he never heard the crash, but heard his dogs barking and noticed that he'd lost power.

Adams and a neighbor, Val Higgins, who lives next to the Bog Brook bridge a short distance up the road, said speeding between the bridges is an everyday occurrence.

Maine DOT workers were still on scene this afternoon installing jersey barriers where the demolished guardrail had been.

Workers said they detected no structural damage to the bridge.
