ROCHESTER - A Rochester man was arrested for driving under the influence and speeding early today after his vehicle struck a church sign on Rochester Hill Road, went airborne and landed on its roof on the church lawn.

Police responded around 1 a.m. to the area of Grace Community Church on Rochester Hill Road where a brief investigation revealed that a 2012 Ford Focus driven by Andrew Hatfield 29, of Rochester, had been traveling east at a high rate of speed when the crash occurred.

Police say the vehicle first struck a sign for Grace Community Church before careening into two rocks causing the vehicle to go airborne and travel some 25 feet through the air before landing on its roof on the lawn of the church.

Hatfield was taken to Frisbie Memorial Hospital with what were described as minor, nonlife threatening injuries and later charged with DUI and speeding.

The Ford sustained heavy damage and had to be towed from the scene. Hatfield was bailed and released on personal recognizance with an arraignment in Rochester District Division Court set for later this month.

If anyone has any information about the crash they are asked to contact Officer Cory Krochmal or Officer Jacob Garstin at 603-330-7128.
