PORTLAND, Maine - The Rochester man seriously injured in a rollover crash on the Spaulding Turnpike on Friday continues to improve but is not out of the woods yet.

Lawrence Douglas, 37, the driver in the crash, sustained life-threatening injuries and was Medflighted to Maine Medical Center in Portland soon after the crash which occurred around 8:30 p.m.

A hospital spokesman said today his condition was upgraded to fair after having been in critical condition then serious condition following the crash. The extent and nature of Douglas' injuries were not disclosed due to privacy laws.

A passenger in the car, 54-year-old James Gosselin of Rochester, died at the scene.

Police say the accident occurred when Douglas' Subaru Forester
appears to have been traveling southbound when it lost control, struck the center concrete barrier, traveled off the right side of the roadway and rolled over several times in the area of Exit 15.
At this time it appears that speed may have been a factor in this crash, however all aspects remain under investigation.

Anyone that may have further information related to this collision is encouraged to contact Trooper Greg Dube at 603-223-8490 or by email at greg.dube@dos.nh.gov.
