ROCHETER - A Rochester man accused of 17 counts of forgery was arrested on Sunday evening inside a vacant Lafayette Street apartment.

Josiah Davies, 27, no street address given, was taken into custody a little before 7:30 p.m. after officers were called to the Lafayette Street address by a resident who said he and his neighbors were hearing people inside an upstairs apartment that was supposed to be vacant.

After officers called the landlord and confirmed it was unrented, they made entry into the apartment and found Davies, who had an arrest warrant in effect with regard to the forgeries, which had been made on checks drawn from a Holy Rosary Credit Union account.

The investigation into the forgeries had begun in April after HRCU notified police about the fraudulent transactions, according to Rochester Police Capt. Jason Thomas.

Davies is being held at Strafford County Jail on a 72-hour probation hold from a past case and faces an arraignment on the new charges today in Strafford County Superior Court.
