Safety officials plan stepped-up enforcement for holiday weekend, including sobriety checkpoints Thursday

ALFRED, Maine - York County Sheriff Bill King announced law enforcement plans for the Memorial Day weekend, including several sobriety checkpoints in Western York County.

The Department of Highway Safety kicked off its "Border 2 Border (B2B) seat belt enforcement" initiative on Monday in Kittery.

King said that additional deputies, made possible with grants from the Department of Highway Safety, will be patrolling highways to ensure drivers comply with traffic safety laws.

These extra patrols will be focusing on operators who choose to speed, drive impaired, drive while being distracted (texting) and drive without using their seat belts.

On Thursday, a specialized team of York County Sheriff's deputies along with troopers from the Maine State Police, will partner together in several sobriety checkpoints. The checkpoints will be located on roads that have a high number of motor vehicle crashes to include:

• Route 109 in Acton
• Route 111 in Arundel and
• Route 202 in Waterboro.
