Sanford infant Lifeflighted, Mass. truck driver charged in Waterboro crash

WATERBORO, Maine - A 10-month-old infant from Sanford sustained serious injury when the car they were riding in was struck by a box truck whose driver was later charged with reckless driving.

The crash occurred around 6:30 a.m. on Thursday when sheriff's deputies say that a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee operated by Ellen Kennedy, 37, of Sanford was traveling east on Main Street when she stopped to make a left-hand turn onto Straw Mill Brook Road. Kennedy had her 10-month-old child in the vehicle.

While stopped for the turn, Kennedy's vehicle was struck from behind by a 2019 Freightliner 26' Box Truck driven by Rene Romero, 53, of Lynn, Mass. The 10-month-old baby was Lifeflighted to Maine Medical Center in Portland.

Romero and Kennedy sustained minor injuries and were treated at the scene.

After consultation with the District Attorney's office, Romero was arrested for aggravated driving to endanger and will be arraigned today.
There was no immediate bail.

The crash is being investigated by from the York County Sheriff's Office, assisted by Sanford Police.

Portions of Main Street in Waterboro were closed for some seven hours during an on-scene investigation.
