SANFORD - A Sanford man was arrested on Monday after police say he fired a handgun from the second story balcony of a Sanford motel.

Matthew Chapman, 30, was subsequently charged with reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon, a Class C felony.

Police say the incident unfolded a little before 1:30 a.m. when they were called to the Oakwood Inn and Motel at 945 Main St for a report of shots fired.

Upon arrival, officers heard the sound of more gunshots and found evidence of a handgun being fired from a second story balcony.

Officers then made contact with the occupant of the room, Chapman, who was arrested and taken to York County Jail where he was held on $500 bail. A search warrant was then obtained for the hotel room where a 38 caliber handgun was seized along with additional ammunition.

Chapman made bail and was released.

No one was injured during the incident.

The police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the incident to contact Detective Eric Small at 207-324-9170 Ext 227.
