DOVER, N.H. - A Gonic man who was scheduled for a jury trial next week for allegedly selling bath salts at a Rochester convenience store in 2014 has pleaded guilty to a single charge of sale of a prohibited drug, an assistant county attorney said on Thursday.

Vipul Patel, who was a manager at Jay's Discount & Tobacco on Wakefield Street, was indicted along with his wife, Priaya, in November 2014 in connection with possessing and selling the drugs earlier in the year.

Vipul was sentenced to 11 months in jail, with all of it suspended for two years on good behavior. In addition, he will have to perform some community service.

The charges against both Patels were class B felony drug possession, which can result in a state prison sentence of up to seven years.

Both recently accepted plea deals, Assistant County Attorney Tim Sullivan said.

A notice on court documents showed that a Hindu interpreter has been requested for the trials, which have now been avoided, Sullivan said, adding having to have an interpreter in a jury trial mean an added burden for all involved.

Bath salts comprise many different designer, synthetic drugs which when used to get high are snorted, eaten, smoked or injected.

Bath salts are a schedule 1 drug and have been illegal in the United States for several years.
