Sheriff's Office warns of recent telephone scam

Staff reports 9:20 a.m.

DOVER - The Strafford County Sheriff's Office announced on Wednesday that it's received numerous complaints from residents throughout the county regarding a telephone scam.

The callers, who reportedly have a thick southern accent, tell the resident they have missed jury duty or have a warrant and need to pay money to rectify the issue. In one situation, a resident did comply with this request.

The Sheriff's Office said it will never solicit money over the phone.

If a Sheriff's deputy calls, it will be about official business and will generally result in a physical meeting over legal civil process.

Anyone with questions is encouraged to contact the Sheriff's office at 603-742-4960. If you receive repeated phone calls, please document the dates and times and contact your local police department. Do not engage the caller on the phone.
