CONCORD - Governor Sununu on Thursday voiced his solidarity with President Trump after he declared a "National Public Health Emergency" to focus funding and attention on the opioid epidemic plaguing much of the nation, including one of the hardest hit states here in New Hampshire.

"The President has been focused on addressing the opioid issue since taking office and today's declaration further underscores his recognition of the severity of this issue." Sununu stated in a press release. "I was proud to stand with Manchester Fire Chief Dan Goonan, Jim and Jeanne Moser of East Kingston, N.H., and my fellow Governors from across the country as he became the first President to address the opioid crisis as a public health emergency."

Sununu further stated that he hoped Congress would respond to President Trump's "call to action" and respond by working through barriers that "prevent the fast and efficient flow of funds to communities that need the most help."

He added that the resources should be based on the proportion of the problem to the state, not just the size of the state.

"I am hopeful that today's announcement will also signal an ease in regulations so that New Hampshire has the flexibility needed to innovate and better target the Addiction Services funds that we are currently receiving into areas of the highest need," Sununu said.
