MILTON MILLS - Lee Prescott of Rochester has a passion that could likely bring him a pretty profit.

But then it wouldn't be a true passion, would it?

Prescott builds kayaks and kayak paddles, and they are beauty to behold.

He turns cherry, white ash, poplar and red and white cedar into works of art, some of which were on display at Saturday's Woods, Water and Wildlife Festival held at Branch Hill Farm in Milton Mills.

Prescott's display at the festival was sponsored by the Frank Masson Agency and featured information and technique on how the kayaks and paddles are produced.

On a single paddle nine different pieces of wood can be laminated together to form the heads, while three may be used on the neck, Prescott explained.

A lot of laminate and a lot of work goes into each paddle made by Lee Prescott of Rochester.

Prescott said he has no idea how much time it takes him to produce the kayaks or paddles, because he doesn't keep track, joking if he did he'd actually have to start charging for them.

"I'd probably have to charge an exorbitant price to make sure I'm just making minimum wage," he quipped on Saturday.

As it is, he doesn't sell them, but rather donates them to worthy causes like land conservator MMRG for silent auctions and other benefits.
