Lebanon voters on Tuesday have four choices for road commissioner and three choices for selectman, but there's only one candidate for each position who is best suited to move Lebanon forward and not deeper into the recesses of its corrupt, nepotistic past.

From the moment he took office, Ben Thompson has taken great pains to keep the workings of government open and accountable.

From his powerpoint presentations on the Rescue Department crisis to his willingness to explain in detail the challenges facing the town, he has proved himself more than capable of helping the board to make good decisions and holding town departments more accountable for their actions or lack thereof.

He's open to new ideas like hiring a town manager, a move other selectmen have opposed as they see it a threat to their own parochial sphere of influence.

It's not about whether Lebanon's a quaint little town or a sleeping giant ready to bust out.

However you feel about where Lebanon is headed, it comes down to making government transparent and accountable.

He's done that, perhaps more than any selectman in recent history.

As for road commissioner, the path to transforming the road department to a more efficient business model begins with a man who has run a business for many years.

Chris Gilpatrick shows a willingness to change the way the highway department operates, to try to help Lebanon get a bigger bang for its buck when it comes to paving town roads.

From the outside for years, he's been a constant voice for reform at the department.

We think we should let him have a chance to do it from the inside.

While The Lebanon Voice believes each and every candidate has their strong suit and wants the best for this town, we believe these two men are best qualified to get the job done.

Talk for a little bit with either one of them you'll quickly learn they both have a wellspring of knowledge about local government, and roads.

We say put their knowledge to work for you and your town.

The Lebanon Voice endorses Ben Thompson for selectman and Chris Gilpatrick for road commissioner.
