MILTON - Mi-Te-Jo Campground's request for a permit to expand its campsite capacity was denied due to traffic congestion concerns along Townhouse Road, according to a member of the town's Zoning Board of Adjustment.

Larry Brown said the impact of traffic played an important role of the board's denial. The vote to deny the Special Exception was four in favor, one opposed, with one abstention.

Three Ponds Resort, the owner of Mi-Te-Jo Campground, had applied to expand its number of campsites by about 75 percent.

According to the project narrative included in their town application for a "Special Exception," the owner wanted to add 173 new campsites within two separate areas of the expansion property.

Arguments for the expansion within the application noted that the abutter setbacks exceeded those required within the zoning district, that the nearest home to a proposed site was more than 250 feet away and that the proposed use was an expansion to the existing use.

The application was submitted on Aug. 9.

Three Ponds Resort is owned by Northgate Resorts, which manages 11 campsites nationwide.

Minutes of the Sept. 7 meeting were still not posted on the town's website as of today.

A call on Monday to speak to the general manager at Mi-Te-Jo Campground for comment was not returned.

The campground can appeal the ZBA's decision, but whether they will is unclear.
