Tuesday's activists filled their bellies and took a nap

On Tuesday a handful of political actors/activists sat up at the front of The Governor's Inn banquet hall near the podium from which Sununu spoke during the Tri-Chambers of Commerce State of the State breakfast..

As the governor's Q&A with the audience wound down, a young man with the group asked why ICE agents were allowed to take illegal immigrants off a commercial bus in New Hampshire.

The governor answered that if ICE agents found drugs on the illegal immigrants or if they had arrest warrants out for them, it was OK, but the state had no jurisdiction in such a scenario anyway.

Moments later another activist asked if Sununu was in favor of separating families at the border. The governor answered no and that was why he pulled the state's National Guard unit that was helping border security back from Texas.

After a single audience member blurted out "Leave," the gang of five silently stood up and lofted a prepared banner disparaging both Sununu and Trump and quietly walked out of the room to hearty applause.

My question is who picked up their tab. The breakfast speech was $25 bucks a pop, not chicken feed to most people, especially small business owners. Who paid the gas? I'd love to know.

If these guys felt any passion for their cause, they sure didn't exude it. I used to work on the Amtrak train to Washington and often went to a restaurant near Capitol Hill in Washington well known to have been run by the disciples of Sun Myung Moon and his Unification Church for breakfast.

The "Moonies," as they were often called, tended to customers and took money with a uniformly vapid expression.

These folk at Tuesday's breakfast had much the same look.

I felt no fire in the belly in their words or actions.

Maybe it was just a paycheck, and a breakfast.
