Two bitten trying to stop pit bull attack on other dog

ACTON - Two women were bitten trying to rescue a dog from an attacking pit bull on the Hopper Road on Sunday.

The incident occurred sometime close to noon after which York County Sheriff's Deputies were summoned to the property for a report that a dog that attacked another dog.

Upon arrival deputies learned that the two women, both from Acton, planned a visit with their respective dogs.

When the visiting party arrived with her two dogs - on a leash - the homeowner's dog, a 27-pound 12-year-old mix named "Kramer" approached to meet the visiting canines, prompting one of the visitor's dogs, a large pit bull, to lunge at Kramer biting his neck, according to a press release sent today form York County Sheriff William King.

The dog continued the attack for several minutes until Kramer succumbed to his injuries.

Both women tried unsuccessfully to stop the attack by trying to distract the larger dog with a hose and striking the larger dog with a rake handle and at one point a hammer.

Both women were bitten during their efforts to save Kramer and were treated and released from the hospital from injuries they sustained trying to stop the attack, noted King, who said it was learned that the pit bull is a rescue dog that the woman recently obtained.

The dog is under quarantine, and the Acton Animal Control Officer is handling the investigation.
