ROCHESTER - Foul play has been ruled out in the death of a Massachusetts man whose body was found lying face down in a puddle on a Portland Street sidewalk early Tuesday morning.

Police initially said a preliminary investigation showed no blunt force trauma but during the autopsy a skull fracture was detected, said Rochester Police Capt. Gary Boudreau on Thursday.

Yihui Zhao, 50, of Quincy, likely died around 1 a.m. on Tuesday when he fell from steps at a 376 Portland St. residence and hit his head on the sidewalk below, police believe.

Zhao had recently begun working at the Dynasty Restaurant and lived in the area, perhaps a quarter mile from where he died but had no connection to the residence where the fall occurred, Boudreau said, adding that Zhao "liked to walk around."

Given that he'd left from the Dynasty, going by the duplex at 376 Portland St, this was "not a direct route to his residence," Boudreau said.

Rain was heavy at the time of the fall and it is thought Zhao may have been seeking shelter on the residence's porch when the fall occurred.

Toxicology reports have been sent to a lab but not expected back for several weeks.
