ROCHESTER - The pedestrian struck by a tractor trailer last week on Rochester Hill Road was walking in the breakdown lane before stepping into the path of the oncoming semi.

Rochester Police Capt. Gary Boudreau said Monday the driver of the tractor trailer slowed down when he first saw the man walking in the breakdown lane prior to the crash and swerved and applied his brakes trying to avoid him as he stepped in front of the truck a moment later.

The man is in his 30s and from Rochester, Boudreau said.

The incident occurred around 6:15 Thursday morning in the area of 314 Rochester Hill Road near Profile Apartments.

The victim was Medflighted to Maine Medical Center in Portland where he remains in serious condition, Boudreau said. Police have decided not to disclose the man's identity.

Both the victim and the tractor-trailer were headed northbound at the time of the incident.

When responders first arrived they found the tractor-trailer pulled off on the northbound side of the road. About 20 feet past the tractor-trailer unit they found a man lying on the pavement in the northbound lane of travel.

The driver of the semi was not injured.

Police say there are no charges pending against the driver, and neither speed nor alcohol appear to be factors, however the accident is still under investigation.

If anyone has any further knowledge of the crash they are urged to contact the Rochester Police Dept at 330-7128 or call Rochester Crimeline at 335-6500. All calls to the Rochester Crimeline will remain confidential and rewards are given for information, which leads to arrests.
